The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA is now recommending rear-view cameras on new U.S. cars. This is not enough for some consumer groups. The Car Connection reports
that The Department of Transportation (DOT) is being sued by consumer groups to make the recommendation a requirement on new cars.
CNN reports that 17,000 people are injured and 200 people are killed every year in back-over crashes. 44% of the deaths are children under 5. The rear-view camera systems do seem to be an fairly easy way and inexpensive way to significantly reduce many of these accidents. SUVs have especially large blind zones in the back. Take a look:
