Rearview Cameras to be Required on All New Vehicles by 2018

Rearview cameras will be required on all new vehicles starting in May 2018. The New York Times reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued the rule on Monday. Dr. Greg Gulbransen is one of the proponents of the new requirement. His 2-year-old son was killed in a backover accident in 2002. Gulbransen said in a statement, "It's been a long fight, and this rule took too long, but we're thrilled this day has finally come." Gulbransen says the rule should have been in place three years ago.

The rule will cost car manufacturers to spend more and the costs will likely be passed on to consumers. However, the cameras do make it easier for drivers to see what is behind them. Cars can also make a noise if a driver is getting too close to an object or person. The rearview cameras are safety necessity. Take a look:
