Study Finds 18 Million Americans Would Fail Driving Test

GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test, a study of American drivers from GMA Insurance, has found that one in every American drivers would fail a state drivers test. That comes to 18 million Americans. The worst drivers were in the Northeast according to the study.
The startling results come one year after GMAC Insurance first set out to gauge the knowledge of the American driving public, when licensed drivers were administered 20 questions found on a typical DMV written drivers test. The 2006 findings indicate drivers still do not have adequate knowledge of basic rules of the road, and they exhibit bad habits behind the wheel. For the second year in a row, Oregon drivers ranked highest on the test, with an average score of 91 percent (70 percent or higher is required to pass a standard drivers test), and Rhode Island ranked lowest, with an average score of 75 percent.

"The rules of the road should not be something you learn once when you are 16 years old," said Gary Kusumi, CEO and president, GMAC Insurance - Personal Lines. "We want to remind everyone that they need to work on their driving skills every day. If we're all diligent, we can avoid many accidents and stay safe."
Here are some interesting findings from the study:

  • Overall, drivers in the Northeast region are most apt to fail the test, with state failure rates of 16% or more.
  • Drivers in the Pacific Northwest and Midwest regions are the most knowledgeable, with state failure rates ranging from 1% to 7%.
  • Drivers under 35 years old are most likely to fail a written driving test (18-24 year olds have the lowest average test scores); experienced drivers ages 35-60+, are most likely to pass a written driving test.
  • Roughly 1 in 3 drivers don't usually stop for pedestrians - even if they're in a crosswalk or at a yellow light.
  • Eating and talking on a cell phone are by far the most common activities (42% eat and 40% chat on cell phones).
  • Nearly one-quarter of Americans believe there are circumstances in which it's acceptable to not wear a seatbelt.
  • 1 in 7 Americans have packed their car so tightly that their vision was obstructed.
  • At least 1 in 5 drivers do not know that highways are the most slippery just when it starts to rain after a dry spell. In fact, this is the question most often answered incorrectly for the second year in a row. Fortunately, 97% of those tested know what to do when they hydroplane.

  • Judge Dredd Land Rovers

Judge Dredd Land RoverA webpage on the Internet Land Rover Club website explains how the armored taxis from the 1995 Judge Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone were made.
In the year 2139 few vehicles are left on earth, one of them driven by Judge Dredd, a cartoon caracter from the 2000AD Comic. The only safe way to travel in that violent world is in armored taxis- built by Landrover.

So for the Hollywood movie "Judge Dredd", starring Sylvester Stallone, several 101's were equipped with a futuristic fiberglass body. Design work was done by Gordon Sked and David Woodhouse, the vehicles were built by Land Rover. After the movie was finished almost all vehicles were bought by Philipp Bashall and are for sale. The vehicles are not road legal as they are but can be easily made to. All the 101's mechanical parts are retained. This is a hot, noisy vehicle- but what a headturner!
For sale? Given the interest in Hummers and monster trucks the odds are high that someone will purchase one of these vehicles. (via Neatorama)

    The 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640

2007 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640ForbesAutos.com has an article called "This Bull Runs Rampant" about the 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. The super fast luxury sports car from 0-to-62 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
The number 640 in the new moniker denotes the total hp rating of the tweaked V12 engine, up 60 hp from the outgoing Murci?lago coupe's V12 thanks to a bump in displacement from 6.2 liters to 6.5 liters. Lamborghini says the added power shaves 0.4 seconds from the zero-to-62 mph sprint, bringing it down to a scant 3.4 seconds.

A convertible version of the Murcielago, introduced last year, retains the 6.2-liter 580-hp V12. It has a removable fabric top: When it's installed, Lamborghini advises keeping the speed under 100 mph.

A more aggressive front bumper with reshaped air intakes and a large spoiler underneath distinguish the 2007 LP640 from previous Murci?lagos and make the bold design of the outgoing coupe even wilder. A redesigned rear diffuser encompasses twin exhaust pipes, and the taillights are now all red.
The Forbes article describes other features of the Bull including paddle-shift sequential-manual transmission, 18-inch titanium wheels, carbon-fiber body panels and massive disk brakes. ForbesAutos.com warns interested buyers to expect the price to be "a little north of the outgoing Murcielago coupe's $290,000 base price."

Robb Report's "Best of the Best" issue is due on newsstands today. Here is what the Robb Report said about the winning Maserati
"The Quattroporte is a styling masterpiece ... the unpretentious Pininfarina shape will continue to turn heads when other sedans have become yesterday's styling fad. Young Adults Covet Grandpa Cars

KOTV.com reports that some young adults have a keen interest in older vehicles like the '69 Buick Electra and the '83 Buick Regal -- vehicles also known as grandpa cars.
It's called pimpin' or donkin' and no, most of us didn't know what that meant either. But basically, it means restoring, specifically old American cars generally from around 1970. "This is a '69 Buick Electra. Just an old man kinda Grandpa car." Believe it or not, 20-year-old Ian Huber is just the 2nd owner of this car.

He got it from an older gentleman who lived in University Tower. And you can bet car-makers are scratching their heads trying to figure out how it could appeal to both of them. "One thing, they're fairly easy to work on. Modern cars, it's computerized. You've gotta have computers to work on the engines. It's a lot harder to do mechanical upgrades and just modify."

"I kind of wanted to bring it back and keep it around, I didn't want it to die out." 22-year-old Stephen Walker is in the process of donkin' a '83 Buick Regal. "New interior, re-paint a little, new rims, that's about it. Maybe a small-block chevy instead of the V6."

Don't forget the 8 batteries and the hydraulics. Steve Berg: "How much does all of this stuff cost?" Stephen Walker: "Around $4,000, because when you do this, the car has to be taken completely apart." Ian Huber: "I've done power door locks on it." Granted there have been a few changes since grandpa drove it, but the appeal crosses generations. For Huber, it's been a bonding experience with his dad who's in the restoration business.
The young man who bought the '69 Buick Electra has a good point about older cars being easier to work on. Today's cars come with so many computerized components that you almost need a mechanical or computer engineering degree to work on them. The older vehicles are simply the best for pimpin'.

Tata Motors to Manufacture $2,000 Car

The Associated Press reports that India's Tata Motors has announced plans to build a $2,000 family car. The actual planned price will be about $2,200. The vehicles will be built in Tata's plants located in communist-ruled West Bengal.
A prototype of the five-seater model to be manufactured at the West Bengal plant is undergoing tests at a Tata facility in the western Indian city of Pune, Tata said.

He said the company aims to keep the car's price below 100,000 rupees ($2,200), making it the cheapest car on the Indian road. Currently, Maruti Udyog Ltd., in which Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp. holds a controlling stake, makes a compact hatchback that is India's cheapest car, selling for about 225,000 rupees ($5,000).

The Tata project is expected to create about 10,000 jobs at the plant and vendor chains.

Tata didn't say how many cars the proposed plant will produce each year. It also wasn't clear if the company planned to sell the car in overseas markets as well.
Tata Motors says there are more than 3 million Tata vehicles on India's roads. Jalopnik writes, "he cars will be a lesson in Minimalism, with stamped-out bodies slapped on a tubular frame in small, local factories. If the project works, it?s a Nobel Prize waiting to be awarded." Autoblog points out that the cheap $2,200 vehicle has not yet been named. Dance with Shadows discusses some other vehicles from Tata Motors.

GM to Cut Jobs in the UK

CNN reports that GM is cutting about 900 jobs in the UK.
GM, the world's largest carmaker by volume, said on Wednesday it would axe one of three shifts at its Ellesmere Port plant, affecting about 900 jobs as it seeks to compensate for an expected decline in sales of its Astra compact model.

The move followed unsuccessful negotiations with labor representatives who wanted to share production cuts across other plants in Germany and Belgium that make the ageing Opel/Vauxhall Astra model.

"Our industry simply cannot afford to stop continually improving productivity in its Western European car plants," GM Europe President Carl-Peter Forster, who angered workers after flagging the job cuts last week, said.

The cuts, to take effect later in the summer, follow plans announced by Peugeot Citroen last month to close its central England plant, eliminating 2,300 jobs, and more than 5,000 job losses when British carmaker MG Rover collapsed last year.
Last year GM announced 30,000 job cuts in the U.S. as well as several plant closings.

Some SUVs Still Hot Despite Gas Prices

Not everyone is rushing to buy a new hybrid. An MSNBC.com article SUV models like the SRX and the Cadillac Escalade are still in demand by consumers that appear more concerned with the type of vehicle they buy then the gas mileage it gets.
With all the histrionics about rising gas prices coming out of Washington these days, SUVs must be an endangered species in our nation's capital, right? Well, not exactly. At Capitol Cadillac, just inside the Beltway, SUVs are flying off the lot. Last week, former White House chief of staff Andy Card dropped by to pick up a new SRX, Caddy's midsize SUV, says dealer Daniel Jobe. But Jobe's hottest seller, by far, is the newly redesigned chrome-encrusted Cadillac Escalade, an incredible hulk that gets 13mpg in the city. "My biggest problem is not gas prices," says Jobe, "it's getting enough of these trucks."
The article says manufacturers are also still making cars that guzzle gas despite the higher gas prices.
One in four new models today comes equipped with a gas-thirsty V-8 engine?which is unchanged from last summer, before gas prices spiked, according to new data from J.D. Power. And some of the best-selling rides on the road today are GM's trio of beefy new SUVs?the Chevy Tahoe, the GMC Yukon and that blingy 'Slade, which saw its sales surge 127 percent last month. Meanwhile, last year's "it" car, the hybrid, is becoming a harder sell. Sure, dealers are still selling out of the Prius, but sales of the Honda Accord hybrid plunged 69 percent last month and Ford had to resort to a zero percent financing deal to jump-start its Escape hybrid. For all their megawatt buzz, hybrids still account for just 1 percent of U.S. auto sales and are outsold by SUVs 23-1. "Not a lot of people are jumping up to pay $3,000 extra for a hybrid," says Memphis Toyota dealer Kent Ritchey. "For $3,000, you can buy a lot of gas."
It is good to see consumers still buying vehicles but it probably indicates that the demand for gas in the U.S. isn't going to be decreasing anytime soon. Not as long as people are still happily buying vehicles with gas mileage as bad as 13mpg.

Inventor Claims Vehicle Gets 8,000 Miles to the Gallon

Shell EcomarathonThe AFP reports that a British inventor named Andy Green claims to have invented a 3-wheeled vehicle that gets 8,000 miles to the gallon.
The car, named "TeamGreen," is 3.1 metres (10 feet 2 inches) long and a mere 0.6 metres (2 feet) wide, weighing just 30 kilograms (four stone).

"It's a labour of love," said Green, a technician in the mechanical engineering department of Bath University, south-west England.

"I think the car is important because it is a reminder to us all that the way to achieve fuel-savings is to drive lighter cars -- it's the weight of this car that is the main reason for its fuel-efficiency," he said.

Green's car is powered by a single cylinder four-stroke engine with a capacity of just 35 cc.

It will be the only British entry in a global competition in France later this month to decide the world's most fuel-economic car.
Treehugger reports that the Shell Eco-Marathon is being held in France this weekend. TreeHugger says the race has a simple principle: "[To] drive the maximum number of kilometres on a motor circuit with the highest energy yield possible." The photograph from the top right is one from last year's Eco-Marathon. More photographs can be seen here.

Gas Prices Have Consumers Considering New Vehicles

The latest report from AutoVibes says that rising gas price are having a big impact on consumers. Many new car buyers are considering vehicles that get better gas mileage including hybrids. AutoVibes found that more than 62 percent of new-vehicle shoppers are strongly considering the purchase of a vehicle they normally would not have considered, and 30 percent say they already have changed their minds about what vehicle they are going to buy. AutoVibes is a monthly automotive study from Harris Interactive and Kelley Blue Book Marketing Research tracking consumer automotive buying intentions
"The new data from the latest AutoVIBES study provides insight into consumers? future buying intentions," said Rick Wainschel, vice president of marketing research and brand communications for Kelley Blue Book. "Extreme shifts in segment consideration levels reveal just how profound the impact of recent increases in gas prices is on consumers and their vehicle purchase behaviors. This information will be an important bellwether of the long-term effect of this issue on new-vehicle shoppers."

These preliminary April 2006 AutoVIBES data also show an increase in awareness of alternative fuel vehicles. Sixty-six percent of consumers are aware of E85 (a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline), and 59 percent are aware of flex-fuel vehicles (those that can run on either regular gasoline or E85). The April awareness levels for both E85 and flex-fuel vehicles jumped a significant number of points over the previous month (E85 and flex-fuel awareness levels were at 60 percent and 55 percent in March 2006, respectively).

"With gas prices on the rise and continuing to climb, consumers are more aware of and interested in highly fuel-efficient cars now than they have been in the last 25 years," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. "We expect to see increased consumer interest for some of the recently-introduced fuel-efficient sub-compact vehicles such as the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa and Honda Fit, in addition to hybrid, flex-fuel and compact models."
Here are some of the trends for specifici vehicles. As you might expect hybrids are trending much higher while SUVs are trending lower.
  • Consideration for compact sedans is at an all-time high at 19 percent, up four points from the previous month.
  • Hybrid vehicle consideration also reached an all-time high in April at 14 percent, which is more than double the percentage of consumers that were considering hybrids last month. (Six percent considered hybrids in March 2006).
  • In contrast, consideration for mid-size SUVs is at an all-time low at 19 percent, and full-size pickup consideration also is down considerably at 11 percent, a 5 point drop from the previous month.
  • The complete report from AutoVibes can be found here.

Gas Buddy Map Shows Nationwide Gas Prices

Gas Prices MapGas Buddy has an interesting map called the USA National Gas Temperature Map. The map shows what gas prices are like around the country with the darker greens being the cheapest and the oranges and reds indicating where gas prices are the most expensive. A quick look at the map shows that prices are highest out west, especially in California. There are also high prices on the Northeast coast and in Southern Florida. What's really great about the map is that you can zoom in to focus on specific locations. If you want local prices in Chicago simply grab the map and move Chicago onto the center of the screen and zoom in. You will quickly notice there are some dark orange high prices surrounding the city of Chicago. If you right click on the map it will tell you the local average gas price. The map is a service of GasBuddy.com, which offers search tools and price data to help people quickly find low gas prices in their zip code.

Congressional Leaders in Search of Armored Hybrid

A Raw Story article says the AP photographed Dennis Hastert (R-IL), the Speaker of the House, swapping his hydrogen hybrid for a black SUV right after a photo op.
The Associated Press has photographed Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL) ditching his brightly colored hydrogen automobile in favor of a gas-guzzling black SUV after exiting a news conference and photo opportunity at a Washington, DC gas station.

After the conference, which addressed high gas prices, Hastert and other Congressmen had been carted away in fuel saving and alternatively powered automobiles. Just blocks away from the scene, Hastert was photographed ditching his in favor of his usual official car.
However, Hastert may have an excuse for ditching the hybrid. The Raw Story writes that security requires congressional leaders to drive armored vehicles. The Raw Story says House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has been searching but has not been able to find an armored hybrid.
For security purposes, congressional leaders' official cars are required to be armored, limiting their choices in those respects mostly to vans or SUVs. Time magazine reported in December that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has searched unsuccessfully for a suitably armored hybrid.
Surely there is a hybrid vehicle manufacturer out there that could provide an armored hybrid for these two lawmakers?

    $5 a Gallon?

A New York Daily News explains how $100 a barrel oil and $5 gasoline is a realistic possibility.
"There's so much that could go wrong right now," said Phil Flynn, an energy analyst at Alaron Trading in Chicago. "This is the scariest time we've seen in oil in a long period of time."

In addition to the looming showdown with Iran over its nuclear ambitions, terrorists have repeatedly threatened to attack oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia; Nigerian rebels have disrupted exports by 25%; Iraq is pumping out 30% less crude than it did before the war; production in the Gulf of Mexico has yet to return to normal after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and Bolivian President Evo Morales yesterday seized control of the country's oil and gas fields and gave foreign companies 180 days to agree to new deals with the government.

"We're on a hair trigger," said John Kilduff, senior vice president of energy risk management at Fimat USA, a New York commodities trading firm.

"Unfortunately for consumers, we're on the brink of [$100 a barrel] as we speak," he said. "It's been a parade of horribles."
Consumers are already extremely unhappy at $3 a gallon. It is hard to imagine what the reaction to $4 or $5 a gallon gas would be but it would not be pretty.

Kelley Blue Book Names Top Cars Under $18,000

Toyota YarisKelley Blue Book editorial team has named the Top Ten Cars under $18,000 (thx Left Lane News). The Toyota Yaris (pictured on right) topped the list. Here is the list which includes the MSRP prices followed by the New Car Blue Book value.

  • 2007 Toyota Yaris: $14,630, N/A
  • 2006 Scion xB: $15,370, $15,524
  • 2007 Dodge Caliber: $15,985, $15,985
  • 2006 Kia Sportage: $16,490, $16,134
  • 2006 Chevrolet HHR: $16,890, $16,472
  • 2006 Ford Fusion: $17,795, $17,084
  • 2006 Nissan Frontier King Cab: $17,530, $17,179
  • 2006 Mazda3: $18,175, $17,646
  • 2006 Honda Civic: $17,860, $17,860
  • 2006 Scion tC: $17,640, $17,960

And here are some editorial comments about each vehicle from Kelley Blue Book.

    Toyota Yaris
With a long history as a best-seller in Europe, the Toyota Yaris migrates to the U.S. as the least expensive vehicle in the Toyota lineup. Sporting unusually cool styling, Toyota quality and a 34/city and 40/highway MPG rating, the Yaris' value more than exceeds its under-$12,000 starting price.

    Scion xB
The xB has proven to us that, these days, it's cool to be square. Not only does its slab-sided styling set it apart, but its boxy dimensions also mean this diminutive and fuel-efficient vehicle is a surprisingly commodious hauler of people and stuff.

    Dodge Caliber
Caliber changes the small-car game by offering a larger, more flexible interior filled with way-cool features like an air-conditioned storage bin to keep drinks cold, rear speakers that flip down to project outward from the open tailgate, a 110-volt outlet for powering small electronics and a self-charging flashlight.

    Kia Sportage
When buying your first SUV, bang-for-the-buck is a very cool thing to find. Pricing out the Kia Sportage is almost fun when you get to include a sunroof, a great stereo and a tire pressure monitor all for under $16,500.

    Chevrolet HHR
As cool as the 1940s-style exterior is, the Chevrolet HHR is equally cool for its efficient use of space and worthwhile features like remote start and the increasingly requisite iPod connector. It offers hauling ability like a compact SUV, yet it handles like a car.

    Ford Fusion
Size does matter, so getting a well-styled, contemporary midsize sedan with the roominess and comfort of the new Fusion is cool. Even better is the unexpected level of equipment for the price, including remote keyless entry, tilt steering wheel and cruise control.

    Nissan Frontier
Utility is in, and nothing's more utilitarian than a pickup. The Frontier backs up its sharp styling with excellent ride and handling.

    Mazda3
Available as a hatchback or sedan, the Mazda3 is a deft one-two punch to the compact-car segment. We can't decide which model we like better, but the combination of fine driving dynamics, upscale interior and arresting looks make this a "cool cars" list repeater.

    Honda Civic
You know how U2 were cool, then in the mid-90s they weren?t so cool, and now they?re as cool as ever? Well, the Civic has traveled a parallel path to regain its stature as arguably the finest economy car ever built--and cool once again.

    Scion tC
If you're cool enough to appreciate it, the slick styling and fashionable features in the tC deliver "Lexus-like" technology in an affordable package. This year, the improved audio features stand out, including steering-wheel gauges and iPod connectivity.
