Soaring Demand for Hybrid Vehicles
The Detroit News reports that hybrid cars are so popular that there
are long backlogs on orders and customers are paying extra cash to move ahead
in the queue. J.D. Power and Associates reported that by
535,000 hybrid vehicles will be sold annually by 2011 and that by 2008 3% of all vehicles sold will be hybrids. Currently, 1% of all vehicles sold
nationwide are hybrids.
Waiting lists are so long that many customers are paying extra just to
move ahead in line. Others are paying full sticker price for a used hybrid --
a practice rarely seen outside the trade of Ferraris and other super sports cars.
While automakers rely on cash rebates to prod sales, some car dealers are
marking up the price of hybrids, or simply turning customers away.
Toyota already has 12,000 U.S. orders -- a six-month backlog -- for the
hybrid Highlander sport utility vehicle, although the model will not hit
showrooms until June.
The Japanese automaker has curtailed advertising for its new Lexus RX 400h
hybrid to trim the order backlog. It now stands at 9,000.

New Commercial: Mitsubishi Driven to Thrill
Mitsubishi Motors is focusing on its Japanese heritage and pop culture to hippen its image. The ads pitch
the new 2006 Eclipse sport coupe as a thrill to drive. Shots of the
2006 Eclipse are accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of Kodo drums.
More on the new commericals from the Mitsubishi press release:
Mitsubishi Motors' brand image will be distinguished by the contemporary, edgy
look put forward in the new campaign, which incorporates subtle elements of
Asian influence in U.S. pop culture, often referred to as "Japanese cool," or
"J.Cool." As real as the British invasion of the 1960s, the J.Cool cultural
phenomena is popping up everywhere -- from Gwen Stefani's smash hit "Harajuku
Girls," to Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" film series, to Japanese anime
cartoons and "Hello Kitty," to the Academy Award-winning film "Lost in
Translation." A modern mix of Japanese influences with a distinctly current
spin, J.Cool provides a wonderfully distinct flavor and complimentary backdrop
to Mitsubishi's "Driven to Thrill" brand message.

Baby Lambo to Challange Aston Martin DB9
Auto Express
reports that Lamborghini is working on a small
car to challenge the Aston Martin DB9.
Bosses have already hinted at the rebirth of the Eighties' Lambo
LM002 with a new SUV. But now they've said they could follow that with
a front-engined 2+2 GT to rival the Aston Martin DB9. A small two-seater
is viewed as the perfect addition to the family -- especially as Ferrari
has ruled out a car to fit beneath the F430.
Luxist reports that the Baby Lambo will cost over $90,000. Luxist also
notes that Ferrari has also recently announced plans to build a car
that challenges the Aston Martin.

Consumer Reports Tests Convertibles
The Mini Cooper and the Toyota Camry Solara topped a recent Consumer Reports test on convertibles. The cars outpointed four competitors from Volkswagen, Chrysler, and Ford. Consumer Reports engineers tested six convertibles that fall into two separate categories—one of retro-styled sporty cars with manual transmissions and more powerful engines than what's offered on their base models, the other of mainstream, midsized cruisers equipped with V6 engines and automatic transmissions. Full tests and ratings of the six convertibles appear in the June issue of Consumer Reports and on the ConsumerReports.org (subscription required). Here is what CR had to say about the Mini Cooper and the Toyota Camry Solara:
The Mini Cooper S convertible features a supercharged engine and a smooth six-speed manual. Extremely agile handling makes it enjoyable to drive. Operating the convertible top is as easy as pushing a button, and the top features a halfway-open setting that acts as a large sunroof. The Mini Cooper S ($29,820 as tested) is equipped with a supercharged, 168-hp, four-cylinder engine that delivers spirited performance and returns 25 mpg overall, the best in this test group. The six-speed manual transmission shifts accurately. Overall braking performance is excellent. But its ride is choppy, and the view through the small rear window is obscured by the rear seats. The 50/50 rear-split seats fold down to expand the minuscule trunk.
The Camry Solara is as practical as a convertible gets. Based on the Camry sedan, the Solara carries over the comfort and quietness of its sibling. The convertible top is well-insulated and the interior fit and finish is impeccable. But, like many convertibles, the vehicle suffers from body quiver. The Solara SLE ($31,147 as tested) comes with a 225-hp, 3.3-liter V6 engine that delivers ample performance and 21 mpg. The five-speed automatic transmission is slick and responsive. Overall braking performance is very good. The Solara’s trunk was the largest among the six convertibles in this group.

Porsche Provides Details on New Cayman S
Porsche has revealed the first official images of its new sports car -- the 2006 Porsche Cayman S, which is a 295 hp, two-seat coupe based on the Porsche Boxster. The Cayman S will go on sale in the United States and Canada in mid January of 2006 at a price of $58,900 US and $83,900 CDN. Porsche offers the following description of the Cayman:
The Cayman S's muscular 3.4-liter, flat-six cylinder engine propels the car
from 0 to 60 mph in a quick 5.1 seconds and to a top track speed of an impressive 171 mph. The engine is equipped with the same VarioCam Plus variable valve timing system as found on the 2005 911 Carrera. It allows the engine to produce its maximum torque of 255 ft. lbs. between 4,200 and 6,000 rpm.
This engine power is transmitted through the Boxster S's standard six- speed
manual transmission that has been enhanced for the Cayman S with shortened and
more precise shift travel. Offered as an option, the five-speed Tiptronic S
automatic transmission system has been tuned specifically for the new model,
incorporating unique electronic and hydraulic control maps.

Forbes.com: Best Cars for the Price
Forbes.com has an article about the best cars for the price. The cars on the list include the Honda Insight, Honda Civic Hybrid, Chevrolet Aveo, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent, Toyota Echo and the Scion xA. The list contains no SUVs and Forbes.com explains why this is the case:
Despite years of warnings that the car industry was becoming too reliant on sport utility vehicles and pickup sales; that Detroit in particular was ignoring its passenger car divisions at its peril while chasing easy profits; that Japanese carmakers were continuing to build more fuel-efficient attractive cars and light trucks, the recent implosion of demand for these SUVs and pickups still comes as a shock. But it should not. It has been coming for a long time and, like war, a change of season or a lunar eclipse, it now has an aura of inevitability about it.

Sony Offers 3D GPS Mapping Software for Tokyo
Akihabara News reports on very cool looking dashboard GPS mapping software called Sony NV-XYZ777 that is currently available in Japan only and displays Tokyo's roads and streets in 3D. It does look a little distracting for the driver but a passenger in shotgun could certainly use it to enhance navigation around Tokyo. Eventually we will see this kind of technology in the U.S. and Canada. (Via Engadget)

Maybach Exelero: Fast and Sleek
The Maybach Exelero is a stunning new 700 horsepower vehicle that
was just shown to the world in Berlin. Gizmag.com has a report on the show car:
The Maybach Exelero high-performance show car unveiled to the world for the
first time this week is a remarkable car with an even more remarkable
story behind it. The 700-hp V-12 biturbo two-seater is a unique custom
model produced for tyre manufacturer Fulda Reifenwerke, which is using
the Maybach Exelero as a reference vehicle for a newly developed generation
of wide tyres. The German manufacturer of luxury cars built the unique
model as a modern interpretation of its legendary streamlined sports
car from the 1930s, thereby forging a link with the historical predecessor,
which at that time was likewise based on a powerful Maybach automobile
(SW 38) and used by Fulda for tyre tests.
Autoblog also has an entry on the Exelero here. Autoblog says, "The super-Bach can get to 55 mph in 4.4 seconds with the help of two turbochargers a nd 740 ft-lbs of torque." Maybach has a website for U.S. browsers but we didn't see anything there about the Exelero.

GreenHybrid.com Provides Hybrid Informaton and Resources
GreenHybrid.com is an interactive resource about
hybrid electric vehicles. The site offers comparison tools,
information, discussion and community features for hybrid
owners. One of the interesting features of GreenHybrid.com is the
Real Hybrid
Mileage Database. Members of the website who drive
hybrid cars input specific data about their cars including vehicle
type, miles driven, gas tank refills, etc. onto the website.
GreenHybrid.com then compiles this data into a chart showing
which cars get the best mileage. You can view the aggregate data
that shows the hybrid vehicles that get the overall best mileage
or you can click more and look at how specific members are using
their cars and what kind of driving they are doing.

Gas Prices: A Little Relief But High Prices Remain
Gas prices have falled about 10 cents since their peak
last month at $2.27 for regular unleaded (according to the
AAA's Fuel Gage Report). The current national unleaded average price stands at $2.17. Last week MSNBC.com reported that
the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said they
expect gas prices to continue to fall during May but prices
will still remain well above 2004 prices.

Waiting for Bush's Biodiesel Tax Incentives
Bill Maher is wondering when President Bush will deliver on his
promise of biodiesel tax incentives he has mentioned in recent speeches. In a recent blog post on the Huffington Post Maher wrote:
The only question is-which Bush are we going to get on this issue? The "let's not and say we did" Bush who provides lip service to alternative fuels while signing an energy bill-like the current one pushed by House leaders-that commits 94% of its funds to the oil and gas industries, or the resolute cowboy Bush who can embrace new ideas so crazy they just might work.
Biodiesel seems like an obvious alternative at a time when oil prices
are climbing and there is also the real threat of reaching a peak in oil
production. One expert said recently that oil production will reach its peak as early as next. After the peak less and less oil will be available each year and prices will steadily climb.

Commutes Get Worse
For millions of American commuters the trip to and from work is getting longer and longer. MSNBC.com has an article about a new national report on the nation's growing gridlock problem:
Congestion delayed travelers 79 million more hours and wasted 69 million more gallons of fuel in 2003 than in 2002, the Texas Transportation Institute’s 2005 Urban Mobility Report said.
Overall in 2003, there were 3.7 billion hours of travel delay and 2.3 billion gallons of wasted fuel for a total cost of more than $63 billion.
Los Angeles, San Francisco, D.C., Atlanta, Houston and Dallas were rated the worst cities for commuting -- but 51 cities have major traffic problems. MSNBC said that, "Honolulu became the 51st city in which rush-hour traffic delayed the average motorist at least 20 hours a year."

GM, Ford Given Junk Bond Ratings
Standard & Poor's has given struggling auto manufacturers
Forbes and GM junk bond status. The new ratings come at
a time when both companies are hurting from slow SUV sales.
In an article about the story Top Tech News said:
S and P said it was cutting its ratings for GM's long-term debt to "BB" from
an investment-grade "BBB," and Ford's to "BB plus" from "BBB."
Both GM and Ford have been suffering from mounting competition and disappointing
sales of their aging sports-utility vehicle (SUV) product lines, at a time when
US petrol prices are at all-time highs.
On GM, S and P said: "The downgrade to non-investment grade reflects our conclusion
that management's strategies may be ineffective in addressing GM's competitive
disadvantages."
The credit risk agency had a similar message for Ford.

Gibbs Lowers Price on Aquada
Autoblog.com reports that the Gibbs Aquada is not selling well. That's a shame because we would hate to see these James Bond like land and water sports cars dissapear. Autoblog says the price of the cars has been cut from $285,000 to $142,000.
What looked like a Mazda Miata that floats turns out to be a big anchor for the company that wanted to sell them for $285,000 a piece. No buyers have come forward to buy the car even now that Gibbs has slashed the price to $142,000. The company now says they are looking to sell the technology since they can’t sell the car. If Springfield couldn't make it big with the Amphicar, there must not be a big market for sea-faring cars.

Forbes Launches ForbesAutos.com
Forbes has launched a new automotive website called ForbesAutos.com. The site will provide auto information for affluent consumers including articles, reviews, buying guides and news. One of the new articles on the site ranks the ten fastest vehicles. To get the rankings Forbes.com zero to 60 mph acceleration speed using rankings from the Kelly Blue Book. The Lamborghini Murciélago came in first with a zero to 60 mph speed of 3.5 seconds. ForbesAutos.com describes the superfast car:
The newest Lamborghini, Murciélago is named for a Spanish bull that was spared for its valor by the famed matador Rafael Molina "Lagartijo". That was in 1879, when Murciélago was put to stud, fathering a line of fighting bulls that extends to the present. The bull’s namesake, Lamborghini Murciélago, runs fast and reaches a top speed exceeding 205 mph. It is all-wheel drive, with a mid-mounted, 571-horsepower, 12-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission. A two-seater, with dramatic gull-wing doors, Murciélago features a carbon fiber body, with steel door panels and roof. You can also buy a convertible version, called a roadster.

A Plane in Every Garage?
MSNBC.com has an interesting article about how advances in technology have made flying a plane less complicated.
"It used to be that you had to do a geometry exercise to navigate a
plane," said Lance Neibauer, the founder of Lancair Co. of Bend, one of
a handful of airplane manufacturers helping to transform the way Americans
use private planes.
Today's small planes, however, have a "glass cockpit," the system of
computerized displays and controls that makes pilots' lives much easier.
The article talks about a plane owner who is a mother and uses the plane
to take herself, the kids and the dog to visit grandmother. Planes
are still too pricey for most families costing around $200-$300K.
Insurance, gas and maintenance expenses add on to the cost of owning
a small plane. However, some plane owners share the costs with others
to make them more affordable.

Bill Gates and Ford See Hi-Tech Car Future
The Associated Press reports that Bill Gates and Ford CEO Bill Ford Jr.
recently got together to explain the future of cars. Future cars will
be powered by software that provides diagnostics, repair, navigation, entertainment and accident avoidance.
Gates and Bill Ford Jr., Ford's chairman and chief executive, said high-definition screens, speech recognition technology, cameras, digital calendars and navigation equipment with directions and road conditions will set car companies apart from their competitors.
Eventually, Gates said, there could be a car that wouldn't let itself crash.
"That absolutely should be the goal,'' Gates told several hundred participants of the Microsoft Global Automotive Summit at the automaker's suburban Detroit campus. "The embrace of technology will be the key for the leaders of the industry.''

Narrow Micro Cars
Engadget reports on a micro car from Mitsuoka Motors that looks
like a narrow forklift. But for a narrow car that looks like
an actual car check out the Tango (pictured on right)
from Commuter Car Corporation. The Tango has a width of just 39 inches, which the company says
is 6" narrower than many motorcycles.
The Convoy 88 micro car from Mitsuoka Motors is the
narrowest with a width under 35 inches, but it looks
like a forklift so drivers might prefer the Tango when it
comes to micro cars.
