The BBC reports that a rare Bugatti Veyron valued at £800,000 (about $1.5 million U.S.) has crashed in a car accident in England. The luxury car crashed into a van carrying a pregnant woman. The women appears to be ok. The photo on the right is not the Bugatti Veyron in the crash. The vehicle in the crash was black and red. You can see several crash photos on the BBC article.
The accident occurred in heavy rain on a 40mph section of Renfree Way, Shepperton, Surrey, on Sunday.
The rare Bugatti Veyron collided with a Vauxhall Astra van carrying a pregnant woman, who was taken to hospital as a precaution but later went home.
No one else was hurt but police have reported the Bugatti driver for driving without due care and attention.
Surrey Police said the luxury car was driven by a man who had a male passenger with him.
The Bugatti Veyron is said to be able to reach speeds of over 250 mph. See more details in this video below. (via Wikipedia)
This bizarre balloon car came in 10th on Sci Fi Tech's list of ten vehicles for the super wealthy.
Hurtling through a wetland of intrigue and speculation, this unnamed all-terrain vehicle was last spotted in February 2005 speeding around Belarus. With six balloon wheels and what looks like a mighty drive train, this amphibious creature could give you another way to coast from your island home. Although the manufacturer promised to have them on the market by summer 2005, we're still waiting here in the states. If I were you (and extremely rich), I'd call that brother-in-law in the CIA and see what information you can buy.
There are other unusual vehicles on the list as well, like the j1421 Bodakondank personal tank, the personalized jet pack and the sky yacht. If you had the money would you really buy one of the crazy vehicles instead of a hot sports car? If we had the money we would opt for one of the two luxury sports cars on the list instead. The Tesla Roadster is listed in the 4th slot and a limited-edition gold-plated Porsche is listed in 2nd. In 1st place Sci Fi Tech selected the Rinspeed Splash, a land/water sports car.
ForbesAutos.com has an article called "This Bull Runs Rampant" about the 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. The super fast luxury sports car from 0-to-62 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
The number 640 in the new moniker denotes the total hp rating of the tweaked V12 engine, up 60 hp from the outgoing Murciélago coupe's V12 thanks to a bump in displacement from 6.2 liters to 6.5 liters. Lamborghini says the added power shaves 0.4 seconds from the zero-to-62 mph sprint, bringing it down to a scant 3.4 seconds.
A convertible version of the Murcielago, introduced last year, retains the 6.2-liter 580-hp V12. It has a removable fabric top: When it's installed, Lamborghini advises keeping the speed under 100 mph.
A more aggressive front bumper with reshaped air intakes and a large spoiler underneath distinguish the 2007 LP640 from previous Murciélagos and make the bold design of the outgoing coupe even wilder. A redesigned rear diffuser encompasses twin exhaust pipes, and the taillights are now all red.
The Forbes article describes other features of the Bull including paddle-shift sequential-manual transmission, 18-inch titanium wheels, carbon-fiber body panels and massive disk brakes. ForbesAutos.com warns interested buyers to expect the price to be "a little north of the outgoing Murcielago coupe's $290,000 base price."
Maserati Quattroporte Named Best of the Best by Robb Report
The Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT has won the Robb Report "Best of the Best" competition for sedans. The Sport GT, with a 400 hp Ferrari-engineered V8, beat out its competitors including the Bentley Flying Spur, Maybach 57S, Audi S8 and BMW M5. Robb Report's "Best of the Best" issue is due on newsstands today. Here is what the Robb Report said about the winning Maserati
"The Quattroporte is a styling masterpiece ... the unpretentious Pininfarina shape will continue to turn heads when other sedans have become yesterday's styling fad. It is these concours-winning looks, underpinned by performance and fit and finish that are world-class, that make the Quattroporte Sport GT our favorite new sedan."
Autoblog says the Quattroporte Sport GT also won this competition in 2004. You can read more about the Quattroporte Sport GT here on ForbesAutos.com.
MSNBC.com's Scoop and other media outlets are reporting that Paris Hilton has lost her $150,000 Bentley in a bet.
The partying heiress is apparently a poker aficionado, and says she always wins the game in Vegas. But the buzz is that she doesn’t always win — and actually lost her beloved Bentley — valued at over $150,000 — in a recent game, according to various reports. But now an online poker company is offering Hilton a chance to win a new Bently. “If she goes heads-up online in a no-limit Texas Hold'em challenge against poker legend Mike Sexton and wins we’ll hand her the keys to a brand spanking new Bentley,” PartyPoker.com spokesman Warren Lush told the Hamilton Spectator. “Forget one night in Paris, we're offering her one night to win her wheels back.”
The Pleasant Morning Buzz says Paris' rep denies the reports. World e Kiki doesn't think Paris used her Bentley in a bet. Fortunately, Left Lane News reports that Paris has been banned from gambling so even if she did lose her Bentley she won't lose another car as long as her family keeps her away from casinos. Luxist points out that Paris also owns a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
Hybrid Technologies is launching a car called the LiX-75 at the New York Auto Show. The car runs on lithium ion batteries and solar panels and will carry a price tag of $125,000 according to an article in BusinessWeek.
A fledging Las Vegas-based company called Hybrid Technologies thinks it has the solution. Hybrid will launch a car it calls LiX-75 at the New York Auto Show on Apr.14. The sleek, $125,000 sports car runs off of electric batteries, boosted by solar panels on the trunk. It recharges in four to six hours from a regular three-prong electric socket. And the company claims it will go from zero to 60 miles per hour in three seconds and hit a top speed of 200 miles per hour.
"It's the environmentalist mid-life crisis vehicle," says Richard Griffiths, head of business development at Hybrid. "It's a sports car that performs like a Porsche Boxster, looks like a Ferrari, and has zero emissions"
***
The LiX will utilize lithium ion batteries, big versions of the kind that power laptop computers. Because they can store more energy and degrade less quickly when not in use than the nickel metal hydride batteries used in hybrid cars today, they're rapidly becoming the technology of choice for electric-car developers.
"Lithium chemistry is widely acknowledged to be the next generation of battery power," says Lindsay Brooke, senior editor of the Society of Automotive Engineer's magazine.
Green luxury vehicles are the latest expansion of the green/hybrid market. They should be popular because both green cars and luxury sports cars are big sellers to the wealthy southern California crowd.
Supercar's like Stefan Eriksson's wrecked Ferrari Enzo are the hot item for wealthy in Southern California. Eriksson was said to be going over 160mph in his before the crash. Eriksson's Ferrari Enzo was billed as a $1 million dollar car. Wikipedia has a list of some other celebrity Enzo owners. Supercarsite.net has some photos and information about the 2002 Ferrari Enzo. USA Today reports that many supercars are sold in Beverly Hills, California where they can reach the super-rich demographic.
"There's a whole new breed of collector that has emerged in the last three-four years," Sheehan says. "Almost all make the kind of money you cannot comprehend."
This new collector, he says buys the latest to one-up collector buddies. The owner may drive the car, sometimes at racetracks rented out to car clubs, sometimes to the latest trendy restaurant. But piling on miles hurts resale value.
Ferrari, the Italian make with an esteemed racing tradition, says North America is its most important market and nearly three in 10 of its North American cars go to California. Mattioli's Beverly Hills shop sells more Ferraris than any dealer in the country.
"It has to do definitely with the attitude of people living in Southern California, who are very open-minded," says Manfred Fitzgerald, director of brand and design for Lamborghini.
In addition the Ferraris the article also mentions several other supercars: Mercedes-Benz's SLR, Porsche's Carrera GT, McLaren F1, Saleen S7, Ford's GT, Lamborghini's Murcielago , Maserati's MC12 and the Veyron by Bugatti.
In case you missed it TopGear offers a look at the stunning Lambo Murcielago LP640. This aerodynamic Lambo can top 210mph according to TopGear.
A 6.5-litre V12 engine lies at the heart of the LP640, where LP stands for 'longitudinale posteriore', which refers to the V12 unit mounted lengthways behind the cockpit.
With deeper and wider cylinder bores than the previous 6.2-litre V12, the new 6.5 ups power to an imperious 631bhp at 8,000 good-for-the-soul revs per minute.
Coupled to a new six-speed gearbox, which can also be ordered with Lambo's e-gear sequential paddle shift, the LP640 howls from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds - 0.4 seconds quicker than the 6.2-litre model.
And it's helped on its way by an electronic launch-control device called, rather brilliantly, Thrust.
ForbesAutos.com has a feature on the vehicles owned by billionaries. Here are a few of the billionaries listed and the vehicles they own:
Bill Gates: 1999 Porsche 911 Convertible and 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe
Warren Buffet: 2001 Lincoln Town Car Signature Series
Paul Allen: 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe and 1988 Mazda B-Series Pickup
Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud (Saudi Arabia): Infiniti FX45, Hummer H1, Volvo XC90 and Rolls-Royce Phantom
Lawrence Ellison: 2006 Bentley Flying Spur and Bentley Continental GT
Michael Dell: 2004 Porsche Boxster and 2005 Hummer H2
Steven Balmer: 1998 Lincoln Continental
The choices are pretty conservative. The executives don't get as wild as the celebrities do with some of their souped-up rides. We also don't see any green hybrids.
The new 2006 Lamborghini Miura Concept was unveiled at the Museum of Television & Radio in Beverly Hills, CA to a celebrity group of car enthusiasts including Tonight Show Host Jay Leno and Billy Gibbons of the rock band ZZ Top. A press release said that the Miura was founder Ferruccio Lamborghini's favorite Lamborghini of all-time. The Miura Concept will also be displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Monday, January 9th, 2006. Automobilemag.com has some more photographs of the Miura Concept and says to look for the vehicle around 2008 or 2009 at a price of $350,000 -- if it gets a good response in Detroit.
Although the show car isn't a runner, it was designed on the Gallardo's platform with production feasibility in mind. If the response to the concept is amply enthusiastic, look for the Miura as a 2008 or 2009 model with a 6.5-liter version of the Murcielago's V-12 engine. While the original Miura's motor was transversely mounted, the new one would have a more conventional longitudinal configuration. Expect more than 650 hp and a price north of $350,000 if and when the Miura appears.

The 2005 Porsche Carrera GT is pictured in the photograph on the right and it definitely qualifies as a dream vehicle. At $450,000 is costs significantly more than the average home. Here is NADAGuides' description:
"This race bred ultimate supercar redefines the road," said Steve Ferguson, Exotic Car Editor at NADAguides.com. "Talk about a superb machine -- from the styling to the power to the handling, I can't find a thing wrong with this car. Wrap it in a bow, park it in my driveway and hand me the keys. I'm ready for my ultimate holiday gift." With a price tag of more than $450,000 and a V10 605 horsepower engine, the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT Supercar is a 'hold-onto-your-seats-pure-adrenalin-rush machine' designed to WOW even the most discriminate driver.
The Spyker C8 Spyder was recently revealed and made an appearance at the L.A. Auto Show. Autoblog says the stunning sports car is Dutch for "supercar":
OK, forget all you know of Holland, the tulips and wooden clogs and windmills, and replace it with this Audi-powered supercar. The £143,000 Spyker C8 Spyder borrows the S8's 4.2 liter 400-hp V8 and puts it to good use at the rear of a splendidly-finished and unique-looking frame (unique in a good way). A better power to weight ratio than a Modena or GT3 helps the C8 Spyder hustle to 60 in about 4.5 seconds, but the gearbox isn't really suited for such a powerful machine; first and second gear are very short short, and the overall tight stack yields 4000 rpms for a 100 mph sixth-gear cruise, not that anyone should ever drive that fast, anyway.
The Indepedent Online says the car is "hugely powerful" but "completely impractical and absurdly expensive."
Strapped in with the four-point racing harness there is no way the driver can reach the handbrake, for instance, you need to have a co-pilot. You can't see the front of the car either, which makes manoeuvring it rather stressful, and the turning circle - I am not exaggerating - is about the same as a stretch limo's. Also, the steering is way too light, and, oh yes, the brakes don't seem to do much.
Those do sound like some major drawbacks. But it does sound fast and you would look cool driving it.
ForbesAutos.com has a feature on the most expensive sports cars. Topping the list is the 2005 Saleen S7 (pictured on the right) which costs $555,000. In second place for cost is the
2005 Porsche Carrera GT at $440,000. And the 2005 Lamborghini Murcielago holds the third position with a price range of $279,900-$319,250. The Forbes list continues with dozens of more pricey vehicle entries including the 2005 Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, 2006 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and 2005 Aston Martin DB9.
Lexus has unveiled the Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition hardtop convertible at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Lexus says the car color is a "tigereye mica exterior and
camel-color leather interior accented with an espresso dark
brown wood trim." Features of the new convertible include a
288-horsepower, 4.3-liter V8 engine and a nine-speaker, seven-channel DSP-amplified sound system designed by Mark Levinson. Lexus says the covertible's roof can be hidden within the trunk of the vehicle in 25 seconds -- with room left over for storing luggage.
Maybach, Rolls Royce and Bentley Top Luxury Car Study
The Auto Channel reports that a study called the The Luxury Automotive Brand Status Index (LBSI), conducted by the Luxury Institute, has found that millionaires give Maybach, Rolls Royce and Bentley vehicles the highest marks. The LBSI rated 10 brands including: Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Maybach, Mercedes, Porsche, and Rolls Royce.
"Maybach's ability to earn first or second place on all of the four pillars of a luxury brand allowed it to break through despite its relatively low awareness and newness," said Milton Pedraza, CEO of the Luxury Institute. "It is clearly an impressive win for Mercedes Benz, which launched the automobile in the hopes of capturing a solid share of the ultra luxury car segment. Still, the resilience of Rolls Royce and Bentley, given the onslaught of models from new competitors such as Maybach, and from traditional competitors such as Ferrari, Maserati, and Aston Martin, is a testament to their ability to adapt while maintaining their heritage and brand identity."
J.D. Power and Associates has released its annual survey of vehicle
dependability based on questionnaires sent to owners of 2002 model year vehicles. The list ranks vehicle brands by the problems their owners reported per 100 vehicles. The study measures problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old (2002 model-year) vehicles. For consumers, the VDS offers
insight into the reliability and dependability of brands and specific models as they approach the end of a typical warranty period. The 2005 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 50,635 original
owners of 2002 model-year cars and light trucks.
Lexus dominated the 2005 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). Lexus was the top nameplate for the 11th consecutive year and improved 14 percent over its
2004 VDS score. The Lexus LS 430 premium luxury sedan recored the
fewest problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) of any car in the study. The Lexus LS 430 earned a score of 90 PP100 making it the first model in VDS history
to receive fewer than 100 PP100. In the entry luxury SUV category, the RX 300 luxury utility vehicle was the top-performing model in its segment. The LS 430 received the premium luxury car segment award, and Lexus also received awards for its RX 300 (entry luxury SUV) and LX 470 (premium luxury SUV) models.
Porsche made the largest percentage improvement in its VDS score, while Hyundai had the largest reduction in problems reported by owners. Porsche, which ranked second among nameplates, improved 38 percent compared to 2004 —- a 91 PP100 improvement. Although still hovering below the industry average, Hyundai recorded a dramatic 115 PP100 improvement (31%).
Chevrolet captured the most segment awards, with the Prizm (compact car), Malibu (entry midsize car), S-10 Pickup (midsize pickup) and Silverado HD (heavy-duty full-size pickup) each earning an award in their respective segments. Ford received three segment awards, for the Thunderbird (entry luxury car), Windstar (midsize van) and E-Series (full-size van).
The nameplates faring the worst in the study were the Kia, Land Rover and MINI. The Kia, with a 397 PP100, received the worst ranking.
Overall, the automotive industry recorded an impressive 12 percent improvement in long-term vehicle quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2005 VDS study. At the industry level, manufacturers have made a considerable leap in quality, with improvements across all categories. The industry average improved 32 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) compared to 2004. The categories showing the most significant improvements in 2005 included ride, handling and braking; engine; and interior.
Limited-Production Run of Pininfarina Birdcarge Possible
Too often the cool prototypes seen at car shows never enter production. Fortunately, Edmunds Inside Line reports that the cool, sleek Pininfarina Birdcarge may see limited production so that collectors and automotive enthusiasts can purchase one.
The prototype wowed the crowd. And they'll likely love it even more when they hear the rumor circulating that Pininfarina is in talks with Maserati about a possible limited-edition production run of the one-off study, which was first revealed at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show in March.
What this means to you: These works of art will likely be snapped up by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, if they ever become reality.
The Maybach Exelero is a stunning new 700 horsepower vehicle that
was just shown to the world in Berlin. Gizmag.com has a report on the show car:
The Maybach Exelero high-performance show car unveiled to the world for the
first time this week is a remarkable car with an even more remarkable
story behind it. The 700-hp V-12 biturbo two-seater is a unique custom
model produced for tyre manufacturer Fulda Reifenwerke, which is using
the Maybach Exelero as a reference vehicle for a newly developed generation
of wide tyres. The German manufacturer of luxury cars built the unique
model as a modern interpretation of its legendary streamlined sports
car from the 1930s, thereby forging a link with the historical predecessor,
which at that time was likewise based on a powerful Maybach automobile
(SW 38) and used by Fulda for tyre tests.
Autoblog also has an entry on the Exelero here. Autoblog says, "The super-Bach can get to 55 mph in 4.4 seconds with the help of two turbochargers a nd 740 ft-lbs of torque." Maybach has a website for U.S. browsers but we didn't see anything there about the Exelero.
Inside Linereports that the The Bentley Arnage Drophead Coupé (pictured on right), which was popular at the L.A., auto show has gotten the green light. Inside Line describes the new convertible:
The Arnage Drophead Coupé, based on the 2005 Arnage sedan, is the successor to the hugely successful Bentley Azure convertible. It is powered by a 450-horsepower, 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The first of the four-seater convertibles will be ready for delivery in spring 2006.
Bentley chairman Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen described the car as "the most sensationally beautiful convertible."
Inside Line also says a Bentley SUV is on the way but they are not nearly as excited about this vehicle. Inside Line writes, "The end of civilization could be at hand. A Porsche SUV is one thing, but a Bentley off roader? We can only hope that VW reconsiders and puts its money toward more cars like Continental GT instead."
