Limited-Production Run of Pininfarina Birdcarge Possible
Too often the cool prototypes seen at car shows never enter production. Fortunately, Edmunds Inside Line reports that the cool, sleek Pininfarina Birdcarge may see limited production so that collectors and automotive enthusiasts can purchase one.
The prototype wowed the crowd. And they'll likely love it even more when they hear the rumor circulating that Pininfarina is in talks with Maserati about a possible limited-edition production run of the one-off study, which was first revealed at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show in March.
What this means to you: These works of art will likely be snapped up by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, if they ever become reality.

Simulated Oil Nightmare
A Knight Ridder
article reports on a simulated oil nightmare scenario that
shows what could happen if oil prices continue to climb and
gas reaches $3, $4 or even $5 a gallon. Oil recently hit
a record $60+ a barrel earlier this week but it has
since fallen back to the upper $50s -- which is still
very high compared to the mid $30s range we saw a couple years
ago. The simulation has a series of events, including unrest in
Nigeria and terrorism, that lead to a major reduction in the
amount of oil that can be distributed causing oil prices
to soar.
The economic effects of unrest in faraway Nigeria are immediate.
Crude oil prices soar above $80 a barrel. June's then-record $60
a barrel is a distant memory. A gallon of unleaded gas now costs
$3.31. Americans shell out $75 to fill a midsized SUV.
If all this sounds like a Hollywood drama, it's not. These scenarios
unfolded in a simulated oil shock wave held Thursday in Washington.
Two former CIA directors and several other former top policy-makers
participated to draw attention to America's need to reduce its
dependence on oil, especially foreign oil.
Fast-forward to Jan. 19, 2006. A blast rips through Saudi Arabia's
Haradh natural-gas plant. Simultaneously, al Qaida terrorists seize
a tanker at Alaska's Port of Valdez and crash it, igniting a massive
fire that sweeps across oil terminals. Crude oil spikes to $120 a
barrel, and the U.S. economy reels. Gasoline prices hit $4.74 a
gallon.

In second and third place came Taurus and Pisces. Capricorns are the best drivers according to the study. Here is a list of the zodiac driving rankings from worst to best from the study. We will leave it to Tarot.com's Nancy R. Fenn to explain what it all means.

Are Big Cars Safer?
MSNBC.com has a report about an interesting high speed frontal crash test on several big cars: 2006 Lexus GS 300, the 2005 Ford 500, GM's 2005 Buick Lacrosse, 2005 Acura RL, 2005 Toyota Avalon, 2005 KIA Amanti, 2005 Cadillac STS and the 2005 Chrysler 300.
High speed frontal accidents, like those being tested at 40 miles per hour, are among the deadliest out there. But with today's technology, you should be able to walk away from them with no significant injuries.
Brian O'Neill runs the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a non-profit group funded by insurance companies looking to improve safety and reduce claims. The Institute buys cars right off dealer's lots and replicates what might happen if two identical cars run into each other.
The 2006 Lexus GS 300, 2005 Ford 500 and GM's 2005 Buick Lacrosse received the best rating the Institute had to offer. Their dummies were protect by the safety cage and could have gotten up and walked away if they were not dummies.
The dummy in the 2005 KIA Amanti would have sustained a leg injury, but all the cars tested porformed well:
To recap, every large car in this round of tests is rated good. The only one that didn't get a "best pick" was the KIA Amanti. KIA tells dateline it's "disappointed," but "confident" that the Amanti is a "safe vehicle."

The Great VW That Isn't Selling
ForbesAutos.com has a review of the 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton which has a starting MSRP of $66,950. The review says that last February only 69 Pheatons were sold to Americans despite the fact that it is a great vehicle. And dealers are dropping the price by as much as $10,000 off the sticker price. The Forbes reviewers found the Phaeton to be better than any Audi -- so why isn't it selling? Here's why the Forbes reviewers believe Phaeton sales aren't climbing like they should:
The problem is not the quality of the Phaeton--it's the quality of the VW badge. And it's the mediocre reputation Volkswagen dealers have, especially when compared with the better reputation of Audi dealers, who are located right across the showroom floors. But perhaps more than any other factor, the Phaeton's sticker price is driving people away.
VW is known for cheap, populist cars, and always has been. Put it this way: if General Motors decided to build a $70,000 Saturn, would you buy it? Neither would we.

Gas Prices Expected to Climb Again
Gas prices had eased somewhat over the past few weeks by as much as 30 cents in some locations. Despite the falling prices gas still costs more in most locatations than it did in 2004. And with oil prices hitting a record high $58.60 a barrel on Friday it is anticipated that gas prices will begin to climb steadily upward once again. The L.A. Business Journal has more:
The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area dipped 1.2 cents to $2.361 on Friday from $2.373 one week ago. The price was $2.508 per gallon one month ago and $2.319 one year prior, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.
"The prices of crude oil and gasoline on the wholesale market have jumped 15 percent in the past two weeks," said Auto Club spokesperson Paul Gonzales. "Pump prices appear to be at or near their low point. It's likely that gas prices will rise steadily for the next few weeks."

Women's Car Interests Changing
The New York Times reports that women in their 40s and 50s are buying sportier vehicles these days. The article also says that auto dealers are noticing that women are coming into the dealership more informed than in the past.
Women of the baby boom generation have made no small effort to seize the freedoms once reserved for men, so it is not surprising that as this vast group graduates from the soccer-mom years, many are doing what men have traditionally done at midlife: buying a sexy and indulgent car meant more to trumpet their liberty than to haul kids around.
In recent years there has been growth in sales of "fun" or extravagant cars among middle-aged women that are a far cry from family leviathans like the sport utility vehicle or minivan. Industry analysts report sales of luxury vehicles are up for women over 45, and dealers report that more of them are walking into showrooms with more interest in horsepower than trunk space.

Baby Boomers Into Car Modification
The car modification trend continues with car owners adding everything from souped up sound systems to flat-screen tvs to their vehicles. A Christian Science Monitor article says that specialty automotives is now a $31 billion industry. The Monitor also says it isn't just 20-somethings customizing and personalizing their cars but baby boomers as well:
But American giants may be leading the race toward after-market friendliness for an older demographic. In recent years US automakers have taken a nostalgic turn to reach more boomers with money, rereleasing such cars as the Dodge Charger and Ford Mustang.
Mustangs now come with about 50 after-market options, including a variety of body kits made by 3dCarbon, a Newport Beach, Calif., firm recently launched by the founders of tuning giant Wings West. The company also creates kits for Ford F150 and Lincoln trucks, says Ernie Bunnell, a founder.
"Baby boomers really have this kind of staying-young syndrome," says George Moschis, professor of marketing and director of the Center for Mature Consumer Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta. "They feel free to be themselves, and the things that appealed to them in their youth appeal to them now in their middle years."

The Coolest Cars under $18,000
The Kelly Blue Book has come up with a list of what it calls the Top 10 Coolest Cars under $18,000. The list is provided below. If you are curious about the difference between the MSRP and
the Blue Book Value Jack R. Nerad, the editorial director of
Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com, explains: "A couple of vehicles on our
list carry sticker prices above
$18,000, but in addition to reporting the MSRP for a vehicle, we track what
the car is actually selling for -- its New Car Blue Book value. The New Car
Blue Book value allows car buyers to understand what the current street price
for each vehicle is, helping them determine what they can really afford."
2005 Top 10 Coolest Cars Selling Under $18,000
| Vehicle | MSRP | New Car
Blue Book Value |
| 2005 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner | $14,850 | $14,768 |
| 2005 Scion xB | $15,045 | $15,045 |
| 2005 Ford Focus ZX3 SES | $16,460 | $15,853 |
| 2005 Kia Spectra Hatchback | $16,665 | $16,109 |
| 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt LS Coupe | $16,485 | $16,145 |
| 2005 Hyundai Tiburon | $17,494 | $16,643 |
| 2005 Mazda MAZDA3 S Hatchback | $17,665 | $17,216 |
| 2005 Scion tC | $17,315 | $17,315 |
| 2005 Mini Cooper | $17,500 | $17,500 |
| 2005 Honda Element | $18,765 | $17,827 |
Here is what KBB's editors had to say about each vehicle:
Toyota Tacoma PreRunner -- There are darn few inexpensive vehicles that a
guy can feel comfortable in, but the Tacoma is a great personal-use truck that
rides and handles better than many cars.
Scion xB -- The 2005 epitome of it's hip-to-be-square, the xB breadbox on
wheels is the automotive equivalent of Dickies shorts and skate shoes -- if
somebody has to explain them to you, you'll never understand.
Ford Focus ZX3 SES -- Pocket rocket American style, the ZX3 SES shows that
Ford's U.S. engineers have learned a great deal from their European
colleagues, and the styling is distinctive, not "me too."
Kia Spectra Hatchback -- This new-for-05 Spectra offers station wagon-like
versatility and space in an inexpensive-to-buy and reasonable-to-maintain
package. The big plus is its lengthy warranty coverage.
Chevrolet Cobalt LS coupe -- This good-looking new package is a far cry
from its predecessor, the late, unlamented Chevrolet Cavalier. Its taut feel
and good response are a revelation.
Hyundai Tiburon -- There's still room in the American market for an
inexpensive sporty coupe, and the Tiburon plays that tune about as well as
anyone these days.
MAZDA 3 Hatchback -- The MAZDA3 is a huge advance over its predecessor
Protege, and while the Protege was a very good car, the MAZDA3's great
interior and exterior design, plus good power make it a killer deal.
Scion tC -- Take sophisticated styling, a willing engine, a palatable
price; mix in Toyota quality and what do you have? Another winner from the
young Scion brand.
MINI Cooper -- When it comes to surprise-and-delight features few cars at
any price can top the MINI Cooper; in this car you discover more cool features
every time you drive it, and the driving experience itself is remarkable.
Honda Element -- If you want versatility, you're in your Element. The
reverse-hinged rear doors make a fashion statement, but the big advantages of
the Element are its form-follows-function design and its overall usability.

Where are the Best and Worst Drivers?
Allstate Insurance Company has released the findings from their study about which U.S. cities have the best and worst drivers. Allstate researchers analyzed internal data to determine the likelihood drivers in America's largest 196 cities (cities with over 100,000 residents) would experience an auto collision compared to the national average.
The study found that drivers in Cedar Rapids, Iowa were the least likely
to have a crash.
The study revealed that the average driver in the central Iowa city will
experience an auto collision every 15 years, compared to the
national likelihood of a crash every 10 years -- making them
33.28 percent less likely to have an accident than the national average.
The worst ranked city was Washington D.C. Drivers in D.C. had one
accident every 5.2 years on average.
A PDF file containing Allstate's rankings of all U.S. cities with over

Mercedes-Benz Bionic Car Inspired by a Fish
DaimlerChrysler is using a new concept vehicle to examine the potential of bionics for automobile development. The Mercedes-Benz bionic car study had its world premiere at DaimlerChrysler Innovation Symposium in Washington. The car's engineers looked for a specific example in nature which would approximate the idea of an aerodynamic, safe, comfortable and environmentally compatible car. The example they came up with was the boxfish. Despite its boxy, cube-shaped body, this tropical fish is outstandingly streamlined. With an accurately constructed model of the boxfish the engineers in Stuttgart said they were able to achieve a wind drag coefficient of just 0.06 in the wind tunnel. DaimlerChrylser also said the car gets 20% lower fuel consumption and 80% lower nitrogen oxide
emissions. Using the boxfish design, DaimlerChrysler also says it was
able to build a 1/3 lighter car without a reduction in strength or
crash safety.
