Japanese Automakers Dominate Consumer Reports Auto Rankings
The Associated Press reports that Japanese automakers have dominated the Consumer Reports auto reliability and survey rankings. The top ten picks by the magazine are all Japanese made vehicles. The Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle, was number one for the fourth straight year.
For the second time in 10 years, all the magazine's top-10 picks are Japanese nameplates. This year's list includes five new models: the Toyota RAV4, Infiniti G35, Toyota Sienna, Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Honda Fit.
The list features vehicles that performed well in Consumer Reports' tests, have at least average predicted reliability and adequate performance in government and insurance industry crash protection tests.
The Toyota Prius ranked as the most satisfying vehicle overall for the fourth straight year based on the percentage of respondents who said they would buy the same model again, according to the magazine's annual car owner satisfaction survey. The Chevrolet Corvette again came in second.
THere was some good news for U.S. automakers. According to the AP, "Seven domestic models made the top cut, compared with four last year." So that's a little bit of an improvement. More information about Consumer Reports choices can be found here on the magazine's website.

Motor Trend Names Car and Truck of the Year
Motor Trend has named the redesigned 2007 Chevrolet Silverado as its 2007 Truck of the Year.
"The Silverado impressed us most of all because it is a great reworking of an iconic American vehicle," said Angus MacKenzie, editor in chief of Motor Trend. "The Chevy pick up truck has been a part of the American automotive landscape for decades. This Silverado takes it into the twenty-first century."
MacKenzie said the 2007 Silverado is leaps ahead of the vehicle it is replacing, citing a number of measurable improvements in refinement and fuel-economy, such as a 5.3 liter V-8 engine that can shift into V-4 mode for greater mileage per gallon, and an optional interior that offers near-luxury car levels of comfort and equipment. The Motor Trend team also noted a tremendous improvement in perceived quality throughout the new Silverado. The use of upscale materials and thoughtful design details mean the new Silverado now beats some SUVs in terms of fit and finish.
General Motors engineers haven't forgotten the Silverado often works for a living. The new model offers a choice of cab and bed sizes, plus suspensions and drive trains, to suit a variety of applications. Developed in conjunction with GM's new GMT900 SUVs, the new Silverado remains truck-tough under its classy sheet metal.
MacKenzie added, "The Silverado offers traditional values people want in a pick-up - it's rugged, durable and versatile, but it's also stylish and comfortable. GM has done a good job in understanding that these trucks are not just for work but also for recreation, and it's done a great job in maintaining the Silverado's reputation for value - prices have only increased about $300 on most models."
Earlier this year Motor Trend selected the Toyota Camry as the 2007 Car of the Year. The award goes to the entire Camry range, including the Camry Hybrid.
"Creating an innovative, engaging automobile with broad mainstream appeal is one of the toughest tasks facing any automaker," said Angus MacKenzie, editor in chief of Motor Trend. "The Camry is the one car rival automakers all wish they could build. It offers something for nearly everyone—performance, efficiency, and roominess-at a price point most Americans can afford."
MacKenzie added, "Toyota offers the Camry with a regular four cylinder engine, or a sporty V-6 that enables it to hit 60mph in just six seconds – that's about as fast as a V-8 musclecar from the 60s and 70s. Buyers looking for ultimate fuel economy can choose the Camry Hybrid, which uses the same innovative hybrid powertrain technology as Toyota’s Prius to save gas."

Boating Magazine Selects Pursuit's Ls 345 Drummond Runner as Boat of the Year
Boating Magazine has selected Pursuit's Ls 345 Drummond Runner as the Boat Of The Year. The magazine's editor-in-chief Randy Steele said in a statement that the editorial decision was unanimous and that the editors took only five minutes to decide.
"This boat is so ground-breaking and so trend-setting that the choice was completely unanimous," said Steele. "Usually it takes days for our editors to come to an agreement. This year, the decision was made in five minutes."
What sets the 345 Drummond Runner apart from the other 150 boats that the Boating Tech Team tested, was its cockpit. A free-standing island (much like those found in many home kitchens) sits halfway in the forward end of the cockpit. This center-island cockpit design frees up space in the main cabin, essentially making the 34.5 inch cabin seem as spacious as one found on a 40 footer. Other cockpit features include a 2.6 cubic foot refrigerator, stainless-steel microwave, single-burner gas stove, freshwater sink and stowage drawers, all of which make onboard cooking and eating an outdoors affair -- which it should be on any day it isn't raining.
Editors also agreed that cruising on the LS 345 Drummond was pure pleasure, thanks to an aggressive 24 1/2 inch-degree deadrise hull that's backed up by resin-infused fiberglass stringers. The boat also comes in a dedicated sportsfishing version for hardcore anglers.
Boating's Boat of the Year is chosen each year by the magazine's Tech Team based on performance, innovation, and value and is regarded as one of the marine industries highest honors.
You can also read an article about Pursuit's Ls 345 Drummond Runner here on the Boating Magazine website.

Maserati Quattroporte Named Best of the Best by Robb Report
The Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT has won the Robb Report "Best of the Best" competition for sedans. The Sport GT, with a 400 hp Ferrari-engineered V8, beat out its competitors including the Bentley Flying Spur, Maybach 57S, Audi S8 and BMW M5. Robb Report's "Best of the Best" issue is due on newsstands today. Here is what the Robb Report said about the winning Maserati
"The Quattroporte is a styling masterpiece ... the unpretentious Pininfarina shape will continue to turn heads when other sedans have become yesterday's styling fad. It is these concours-winning looks, underpinned by performance and fit and finish that are world-class, that make the Quattroporte Sport GT our favorite new sedan."
Autoblog says the Quattroporte Sport GT also won this competition in 2004. You can read more about the Quattroporte Sport GT here on ForbesAutos.com.

Kelley Blue Book Names Top Cars Under $18,000
Kelley Blue Book editorial team has named the Top Ten Cars under $18,000 (thx Left Lane News). The Toyota Yaris (pictured on right) topped the list. Here is the list which includes the MSRP prices followed by the New Car Blue Book value.
2007 Toyota Yaris: $14,630, N/A
2006 Scion xB: $15,370, $15,524
2007 Dodge Caliber: $15,985, $15,985
2006 Kia Sportage: $16,490, $16,134
2006 Chevrolet HHR: $16,890, $16,472
2006 Ford Fusion: $17,795, $17,084
2006 Nissan Frontier King Cab: $17,530, $17,179
2006 Mazda3: $18,175, $17,646
2006 Honda Civic: $17,860, $17,860
2006 Scion tC: $17,640, $17,960
And here are some editorial comments about each vehicle from Kelley Blue Book.
Toyota Yaris
With a long history as a best-seller in Europe, the Toyota Yaris migrates to the U.S. as the least expensive vehicle in the Toyota lineup. Sporting unusually cool styling, Toyota quality and a 34/city and 40/highway MPG rating, the Yaris' value more than exceeds its under-$12,000 starting price.
Scion xB
The xB has proven to us that, these days, it's cool to be square. Not only does its slab-sided styling set it apart, but its boxy dimensions also mean this diminutive and fuel-efficient vehicle is a surprisingly commodious hauler of people and stuff.
Dodge Caliber
Caliber changes the small-car game by offering a larger, more flexible interior filled with way-cool features like an air-conditioned storage bin to keep drinks cold, rear speakers that flip down to project outward from the open tailgate, a 110-volt outlet for powering small electronics and a self-charging flashlight.
Kia Sportage
When buying your first SUV, bang-for-the-buck is a very cool thing to find. Pricing out the Kia Sportage is almost fun when you get to include a sunroof, a great stereo and a tire pressure monitor all for under $16,500.
Chevrolet HHR
As cool as the 1940s-style exterior is, the Chevrolet HHR is equally cool for its efficient use of space and worthwhile features like remote start and the increasingly requisite iPod connector. It offers hauling ability like a compact SUV, yet it handles like a car.
Ford Fusion
Size does matter, so getting a well-styled, contemporary midsize sedan with the roominess and comfort of the new Fusion is cool. Even better is the unexpected level of equipment for the price, including remote keyless entry, tilt steering wheel and cruise control.
Nissan Frontier
Utility is in, and nothing's more utilitarian than a pickup. The Frontier backs up its sharp styling with excellent ride and handling.
Mazda3
Available as a hatchback or sedan, the Mazda3 is a deft one-two punch to the compact-car segment. We can't decide which model we like better, but the combination of fine driving dynamics, upscale interior and arresting looks make this a "cool cars" list repeater.
Honda Civic
You know how U2 were cool, then in the mid-90s they weren’t so cool, and now they’re as cool as ever? Well, the Civic has traveled a parallel path to regain its stature as arguably the finest economy car ever built--and cool once again.
Scion tC
If you're cool enough to appreciate it, the slick styling and fashionable features in the tC deliver "Lexus-like" technology in an affordable package. This year, the improved audio features stand out, including steering-wheel gauges and iPod connectivity.

BMW Leads Technology Index
Autopia reports that a study from Telematics Research has found that the BMW vehicles have the most most advanced technology features. BMW had a big lead but was followed by Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac. Ford and Hyundai had the least advanced technology features.
Not surprisingly, the TRG ratings show that vehicle manufacturers that tend to sell luxury vehicles are including more safety and entertainment features than economy car maker Hyundai, which ranked last.
However, Lincoln, and Volvo's appearance along with Ford at the bottom was a bit of a surprise. Dodge and Toyota, and Chevy, which have vehicles at a wide variety of price ranges all were in the middle of the pack.
TRG says its Technology Index is based on 30 criteria in the areas of telematics, navigation, phone options, and driver assist technologies. Examples of these high-tech features include monitored telematics, navigation, Bluetooth, voice recognition, premium audio/entertainment and driver assist. TRG expects Asian car manufacturers to move up the list: "Look for a continued movement up the ladder by Asian value brands who are adding these features at a rapid pace."

What Car Names BMW 3 Series Car of the Year
What Car magazine has named the BMW 3-series as its annual pick for Car of the Year.
We'd expected BMW's compact executive contender to be good, but we didn't expect it to be this good. In recent years, the best compact execs have been separated by the smallest of margins. The BMW, especially the 2.0-litre diesel version recommended here, has raised standards more than we thought possible.
Whatever your priorities, it delivers. The 320d is every bit as sharp as you'd expect of a BMW. It's still the keen driver's choice, yet it combines this driver appeal with an impressively supple ride.
Refinement, however, is the area in which BMW has really rewritten the rules. This used to be Mercedes' patch, but now BMW is the quietest car in the class, making it the preferred choice for any journey you plan to tackle. An empty road, a city at rush hour, a long haul on the motorway – we'd take the BMW every time.
Any 3 Series is good, but the 320d is the pick of the crop. The 163bhp 2.0-litre diesel hits the sweet spot of performance, fuel economy, low emissions and refinement. There's little reason to spend extra to obtain one of the more powerful engine options.
What Car also likes the Mazda MX-5 calling it the best luxury car available. The Green Car of the Year award went to Toyota.

Honda Civic Wins Motor Trend's Car of the Year
Motor Trend has named the Honda Civic as the 2006 Car of the Year. Motor Trend explains why they picked the Honda Civic.
"Honda deserves a standing ovation for not playing it safe again," said Angus MacKenzie, editor-in-chief of Motor Trend. "With the sizzling Si, a sleek coupe, an elegant sedan, and a Hybrid that averages 50 miles per gallon, each model shines through with what Motor Trend looks for when crowning Car of the Year. The engineering passion that Honda Motor Company was founded on radiates from these new Civics."
After two full weeks of intense scrutiny, track testing, performance drives, and walk-around appraisals, Motor Trend editors found each of the 2006 Honda Civic models to be fun to drive and terrific value. With their bold, contemporary styling and innovative technology the new Civics are primed for success in one of the most competitive market segments in the country. For the past nine years the Honda Civic has been the best-selling retail compact car in the U.S., with Honda expecting sales for these new models to be even stronger.
You can also view a video about the winner. Last year Motor Trend's car of the year was the Chrysler 300. USA Today also has an article about Motor Trend's pick.

1995 Honda Civic Tops 2004 Most Stolen Vehicles List
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has released information about the most stolen vehicles in 2004 in a report called Hot Wheels. They say a vehicle is stolen every 25.5 seconds. For 2004, the top ten most stolen vehicles in the United States by make, model, and model year were:
- 1995 Honda Civic
- 1989 Toyota Camry
- 1991 Honda Accord
- 1994 Dodge Caravan
- 1994 Chevrolet Full Size C/K 1500 Pickup
- 1997 Ford F150 Series
- 2003 Dodge Ram Pickup
- 1990 Acura Integra
- 1988 Toyota Pickup
- 1991 Nissan Sentra
As you can see most of the vehicles are older models that are being stolen.
The NICB also provided some tips that it calls its "layered approach" for keeping your vehicle from becoming one of the NICB's statistics.
Common Sense:
The cheapest form of defense is to simply employ the anti-theft devices that are standard on all vehicles: locks. Lock your car and take your keys.
Warning Device:
Having and using a visible or audible warning device is another item that can ensure that your car remains where you left it.
Immobilizing Device:
"Kill" switches, fuel cut-offs, and smart keys are among the devices which are high and low tech, but extremely effective. Generally speaking, if your car won't start, it won't get stolen.
Tracking Device:
On the higher end of high tech are the newer devices which can alert you—and law enforcement—the moment an unauthorized user moves your vehicle.

Edmunds Names Most Wanted Vehicles for 2005
Edmunds.com's editors have selected their Most Wanted Vehicles for 2005. The editors voted for their 26 favorite models in multiple vehicle classes. They also named the "Most Significant Vehicle of the Year" which went to Chrysler's 300 sedan.
Chrysler took a chance when it decided on such a radical design for the 300 and the results speak for themselves. Along with an award like Most Significant of the Year, the 300 will also serve to garner the respect of car buyers who always yearned for something a little different but couldn't justify something exotic to fulfill their wishes. The 300 not only gives them something to aspire to, it gave fans of the American sedan something to be proud of — a most significant feat indeed.
Runners up in the "Most Significant Vehicle" category include the
Ford Mustang, Subaru Legacy and Lotus Elise.

Maybach, Rolls Royce and Bentley Top Luxury Car Study
The Auto Channel reports that a study called the The Luxury Automotive Brand Status Index (LBSI), conducted by the Luxury Institute, has found that millionaires give Maybach, Rolls Royce and Bentley vehicles the highest marks. The LBSI rated 10 brands including: Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Maybach, Mercedes, Porsche, and Rolls Royce.
"Maybach's ability to earn first or second place on all of the four pillars of a luxury brand allowed it to break through despite its relatively low awareness and newness," said Milton Pedraza, CEO of the Luxury Institute. "It is clearly an impressive win for Mercedes Benz, which launched the automobile in the hopes of capturing a solid share of the ultra luxury car segment. Still, the resilience of Rolls Royce and Bentley, given the onslaught of models from new competitors such as Maybach, and from traditional competitors such as Ferrari, Maserati, and Aston Martin, is a testament to their ability to adapt while maintaining their heritage and brand identity."

The Coolest Cars under $18,000
The Kelly Blue Book has come up with a list of what it calls the Top 10 Coolest Cars under $18,000. The list is provided below. If you are curious about the difference between the MSRP and
the Blue Book Value Jack R. Nerad, the editorial director of
Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com, explains: "A couple of vehicles on our
list carry sticker prices above
$18,000, but in addition to reporting the MSRP for a vehicle, we track what
the car is actually selling for -- its New Car Blue Book value. The New Car
Blue Book value allows car buyers to understand what the current street price
for each vehicle is, helping them determine what they can really afford."
2005 Top 10 Coolest Cars Selling Under $18,000
| Vehicle | MSRP | New Car
Blue Book Value |
| 2005 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner | $14,850 | $14,768 |
| 2005 Scion xB | $15,045 | $15,045 |
| 2005 Ford Focus ZX3 SES | $16,460 | $15,853 |
| 2005 Kia Spectra Hatchback | $16,665 | $16,109 |
| 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt LS Coupe | $16,485 | $16,145 |
| 2005 Hyundai Tiburon | $17,494 | $16,643 |
| 2005 Mazda MAZDA3 S Hatchback | $17,665 | $17,216 |
| 2005 Scion tC | $17,315 | $17,315 |
| 2005 Mini Cooper | $17,500 | $17,500 |
| 2005 Honda Element | $18,765 | $17,827 |
Here is what KBB's editors had to say about each vehicle:
Toyota Tacoma PreRunner -- There are darn few inexpensive vehicles that a
guy can feel comfortable in, but the Tacoma is a great personal-use truck that
rides and handles better than many cars.
Scion xB -- The 2005 epitome of it's hip-to-be-square, the xB breadbox on
wheels is the automotive equivalent of Dickies shorts and skate shoes -- if
somebody has to explain them to you, you'll never understand.
Ford Focus ZX3 SES -- Pocket rocket American style, the ZX3 SES shows that
Ford's U.S. engineers have learned a great deal from their European
colleagues, and the styling is distinctive, not "me too."
Kia Spectra Hatchback -- This new-for-05 Spectra offers station wagon-like
versatility and space in an inexpensive-to-buy and reasonable-to-maintain
package. The big plus is its lengthy warranty coverage.
Chevrolet Cobalt LS coupe -- This good-looking new package is a far cry
from its predecessor, the late, unlamented Chevrolet Cavalier. Its taut feel
and good response are a revelation.
Hyundai Tiburon -- There's still room in the American market for an
inexpensive sporty coupe, and the Tiburon plays that tune about as well as
anyone these days.
MAZDA 3 Hatchback -- The MAZDA3 is a huge advance over its predecessor
Protege, and while the Protege was a very good car, the MAZDA3's great
interior and exterior design, plus good power make it a killer deal.
Scion tC -- Take sophisticated styling, a willing engine, a palatable
price; mix in Toyota quality and what do you have? Another winner from the
young Scion brand.
MINI Cooper -- When it comes to surprise-and-delight features few cars at
any price can top the MINI Cooper; in this car you discover more cool features
every time you drive it, and the driving experience itself is remarkable.
Honda Element -- If you want versatility, you're in your Element. The
reverse-hinged rear doors make a fashion statement, but the big advantages of
the Element are its form-follows-function design and its overall usability.

Forbes Names Coolest Convertibles
Forbes has a list of what it calls the "coolest convertibles."
The list includes the Toyota Camry Solara, Honda S2000,
Saab 9-3, Porsche Boxster, Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, Chevrolet Corvette,
Dodge Viper SRT-10, Panoz Esperante and the Porsche Carrera GT.
Also on the list is the Ford Mustang (pictured on right) about
which Forbes.com says:
Ford has a huge hit on its hands with the new Mustang, and dealers
can barely keep up with demand. In the first four months of 2005,
Ford sold 61,820 Mustangs in the U.S. -- an increase of 19% compared
with the same period in 2004.

Consumer Reports Tests Convertibles
The Mini Cooper and the Toyota Camry Solara topped a recent Consumer Reports test on convertibles. The cars outpointed four competitors from Volkswagen, Chrysler, and Ford. Consumer Reports engineers tested six convertibles that fall into two separate categories—one of retro-styled sporty cars with manual transmissions and more powerful engines than what's offered on their base models, the other of mainstream, midsized cruisers equipped with V6 engines and automatic transmissions. Full tests and ratings of the six convertibles appear in the June issue of Consumer Reports and on the ConsumerReports.org (subscription required). Here is what CR had to say about the Mini Cooper and the Toyota Camry Solara:
The Mini Cooper S convertible features a supercharged engine and a smooth six-speed manual. Extremely agile handling makes it enjoyable to drive. Operating the convertible top is as easy as pushing a button, and the top features a halfway-open setting that acts as a large sunroof. The Mini Cooper S ($29,820 as tested) is equipped with a supercharged, 168-hp, four-cylinder engine that delivers spirited performance and returns 25 mpg overall, the best in this test group. The six-speed manual transmission shifts accurately. Overall braking performance is excellent. But its ride is choppy, and the view through the small rear window is obscured by the rear seats. The 50/50 rear-split seats fold down to expand the minuscule trunk.
The Camry Solara is as practical as a convertible gets. Based on the Camry sedan, the Solara carries over the comfort and quietness of its sibling. The convertible top is well-insulated and the interior fit and finish is impeccable. But, like many convertibles, the vehicle suffers from body quiver. The Solara SLE ($31,147 as tested) comes with a 225-hp, 3.3-liter V6 engine that delivers ample performance and 21 mpg. The five-speed automatic transmission is slick and responsive. Overall braking performance is very good. The Solara’s trunk was the largest among the six convertibles in this group.

Forbes.com: Best Cars for the Price
Forbes.com has an article about the best cars for the price. The cars on the list include the Honda Insight, Honda Civic Hybrid, Chevrolet Aveo, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent, Toyota Echo and the Scion xA. The list contains no SUVs and Forbes.com explains why this is the case:
Despite years of warnings that the car industry was becoming too reliant on sport utility vehicles and pickup sales; that Detroit in particular was ignoring its passenger car divisions at its peril while chasing easy profits; that Japanese carmakers were continuing to build more fuel-efficient attractive cars and light trucks, the recent implosion of demand for these SUVs and pickups still comes as a shock. But it should not. It has been coming for a long time and, like war, a change of season or a lunar eclipse, it now has an aura of inevitability about it.

AAA and Parents Name 2005 Best Cars for Families
Parents magazine and AAA have named their fourth annual list of Best Cars
for Families, featured in the April issue of Parents, (on newsstands March 15 -
April 12). AAA's auto reviewers and Parents editors culled through more
than 200 new car choices to find the 15 vehicles that best handle the driving
demands of busy moms and dads. They then put them through perhaps the most
grueling test: Real-life test-drives by Parents staffers and readers.
AAA and Parents said they considered everything from air bags and fuel economy to cup holders
and cargo space. The reviewers also installed a variety of child safety seats
and booster seats into every car, making sure it could be done easily and
securely. Of those vehicles tested, the AAA/Parents picks rated among the top
performers in crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The AAA/Parents Best Cars for Families for 2005:

that include stability control, a rollover sensor, and side-curtain air bags for all
three rows.
