Steering Wheels Get More and More Buttons

The steering wheel is quickly become the control center for the entire vehicle. Auto manufacturer's are using the steering wheel to add new buttons and controls for everything from controlling the radio to switching gears. USA Today reports that many cars already have 10 to 15 different buttons on the steering wheel:
The fingertip frenzy isn't just about luxury cars, either. Sure, the $73,750 Range Rover SUV offers 10 buttons or toggles, not including the horn. And the $49,100 Acura RL sedan has 16, in addition to two thumb paddles for manually changing gears. But Toyota's humble — albeit fully-loaded — $26,040 Prius gas-electric hybrid sedan includes 15 places to mash a thumb into the steering wheel.

Automakers say the buttons help motorists keep their fingers on the wheel instead of having to fiddle with dials and knobs on the dashboard, making driving safer.
Many more steering wheel control buttons are expected in future vehicles. USA Today's article said the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class will "let drivers control the volume and play list of their Apple iPod digital music players from the steering wheel." But voice commands are coming as well which may make these buttons less important. Why press a button when you can just say "Window Washers On. Maximum Speed." Auto manufacturers will have to caution to keep these steering wheel buttons and voice commands from getting out of hand.

Disney Enters Volvo Ocean Race With Pirate Ship

The Walt Disney Company and Volvo (Volvo Car Corporation and AB Volvo) have entered into a unique film marketing deal for Pirates of the Caribbean II and the agreement will include the creation of a competitive entry in the 31,250 nm Volvo Ocean Race. We like the idea and think it will generate a lot of buzz for the movie. The Pirates boat (pictured on right) is very cool and sleak looking. Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, said
We're excited to be participating in the prestigious Volvo Ocean Race, which is very much like the 'formula one' of yacht racing. This is a fun and unique way to remind viewers all over the world that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest will be sailing into theatres next summer. Given the film's high seas adventures and nautical themes, this marathon sporting event is a great way to make some waves and generate awareness among the millions of viewers.

Commuter Consuption is a Big Business

The Washington Post has an interesting article that discusses all the consumption that takes places on the way to and from work. Americans consume tons of food, music, audio books, cell phone time, drinks and more on their long commutes.
Americans make 51.3 billion trips to and from work in their own vehicles every year, accompanied by fleets of helicopters scrutinizing the traffic, scores of meteorologists watching the weather and the cheerful sounds of drive-time radio, offering the latest news and entertainment. The daily ride has given rise to audio books, the travel mug and a 7-Eleven Inc. trademark, Dashboard Dining. The national motto has become grab and go, and legions of businesses work feverishly to fill a near-sacred space: the cup holder.
To a commuter the cup holder is a sacred place and more restaurant chains and convenience stores are trying new items that can be placed in it. The Post says McDonald's is selling a salad inside of a cup, Campbell's offers cup-sized soups and 7-Eleven sells fruit in cups. But it is really coffee that drives profits from commuters. The car being filled with gas generates small profits, but the Post says it is really the drivers desire for caffeine that generates big profits for gas stations with convenience stores.
Even though the nation's 138,000 convenience stores sell three-quarters of the gas in the country, says Jeff Lenard, spokesman for the convenience store association, a car is much more than its tank. It's the thirsty and caffeine-fueled driver the stores desire so intensely. "A lot of convenience stores think of coffee as the new black gold as opposed to gas," he says. "You only make a penny or two profit on gas, if you're lucky. You can make more off a 12-ounce cup of coffee than a 12-gallon fill-up."

GM Recalls Over 2 Million Vehicles

GM is recalling over 2 million vehicles. Not good for the company that just reported a bad first quarter. The Associated Press says the brunt of the recall is "1.48 million SUVs and pickups from the 2003-2007 model years, including the Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab, Suburban, Tahoe, Avalanche; Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, GMC Sierra Crew Cab, Yukon XL, Yukon, and the Hummer H2s." These vehicles were recalled because of a problem with the center safety belt in the second row that causes the belts to ride too high -- possibly reducing protection. No injuries have occured because of the faulty seat belt. The AP says GM will fix the problem for no charge. The Associated Press lists the other 500,000 recalled vehicles in this article. AutoBlog also has a list of recalled vehicles.

Can a GPS Network Help Drivers Avoid Traffic Jams?

New York’s Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is conducting a traffic study to see if a GPS network can be used to spot traffic jams. A blog entry on Engadget raises an interesting question about what happens if you have a working GPS network with many connected drivers and all the drivers suddenly head towards the less congested roads:
A $1.3 million study by New York’s Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (funded by federal and state highway officials) links GPS data from participating vehicles into a central database and spits back data on traffic patterns. A driver with the right equipment gets realtime warnings if he's about to enter a congested zone, and can then route around it. Sounds great, but we can’t help but wonder: if everyone's connected, and they all follow the same prompts to avoid congestion, won't the traffic just hit them all when they adjust their route -- and again, when they swerve to avoid the jam they've just created?

Traffic Deaths Climbed in 2004

The Associated Press reports that Highway Death Rate dropped last year from 1.48 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles in 2003 to 1.46 deaths in 2004 according to the government. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that deaths rose form 42,643 in 2003 to 42,800 in 2004. The other problem with trying to measure how hazarous driving is in today's world is that our medical care is constantly improving. So you can have more terribly injured people than ever before, but more are being saved by our quick amublance service, trained emergency and rescue professionals and modern erquipment. The AP reports that Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta urged the nation to wear their seat belts.
Reporting the mixed results, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said the nation was "in the midst of a national epidemic" and urged motorists to buckle up. "If this many people were to die from any one disease in a single year, Americans would demand a vaccine," Mineta said. "The irony is we already have the best vaccine available to reduce the death toll on our highways — safety belts."

It's The End of the Oil as We Know It

The Guardian reports that Colin Campbell, who helped to found the London-based Oil Depletion Analysis Centre, says oil will peak next year. This contradicts many other reports that claim oil will not peak until about 2020. Of course, 2020 is not that far away either. So why does Campbell think it will be much earlier than 2020? Because most of the oil company estimates and government oil reserve amounts are lies.
But the business of estimating oil reserves is contentious and political. According to Campbell, companies seldom report their true findings for commercial reasons, and governments - which own 90% of the reserves - often lie. Most official figures, he says, are grossly unreliable: "Estimating reserves is a scientific business. There is a range of uncertainty but it is not impossible to get a good idea of what a field contains. Reporting [reserves], however, is a political act."
The other problem is that oil is being consumed faster than ever before. The leading regions like North America and Europe continue to consume more oil and now India and China are increasing oil consumption at a rapid pace. To make things worse Campbell thinks we are unlikely to find any major new sources of oil.
"All the major discoveries were in the 1960s, since when they have been declining gradually over time, give or take the occasional spike and trough," says Campbell. "The whole world has now been seismically searched and picked over. Geological knowledge has improved enormously in the past 30 years and it is almost inconceivable now that major fields remain to be found."

New Bentley Convertible and SUV on the Way

Inside Line reports that the The Bentley Arnage Drophead Coupé (pictured on right), which was popular at the L.A., auto show has gotten the green light. Inside Line describes the new convertible:
The Arnage Drophead Coupé, based on the 2005 Arnage sedan, is the successor to the hugely successful Bentley Azure convertible. It is powered by a 450-horsepower, 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The first of the four-seater convertibles will be ready for delivery in spring 2006. Bentley chairman Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen described the car as "the most sensationally beautiful convertible."
Inside Line also says a Bentley SUV is on the way but they are not nearly as excited about this vehicle. Inside Line writes, "The end of civilization could be at hand. A Porsche SUV is one thing, but a Bentley off roader? We can only hope that VW reconsiders and puts its money toward more cars like Continental GT instead."

Bush: GM and Ford Have to Learn to Compete

The BBC reports that GM has reported a net loss of $1.1 billion for the 1st Quarter of 2005. Both GM and Ford saw car sales fall in March, 2005. In a new interview on MSNBC.com, U.S. President George Bush says the two U.S. auto companies just need to learn how to compete:
Insana: Well, GM and Ford are getting hit pretty hard right now based on how gasoline prices are. Are you worried about what the impact of a weakened General Motors might be on the economy because oil prices and gasoline prices are so high?
President Bush: Well, I think they're going to have to learn to compete. In other words, if the consumer starts saying we want a different kind of automobile, they're going to compete once again with, say, the Japanese automobile manufacturers to, to, to, to get a, to keep their lion's share of market demand.

  • Bob Lutz: GM Serious About Blogging

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz promises that GM's Fast Lane blog will continue and that he will still blog. Lutz says he also hopes to see more GM leaders blogging in the future. The Fast Lane blog was launched in January of this year and has received a lot of attention in the auto industry and in the business community for being one of the first major corporate blogs. Here is what Lutz had to say about Fast Lane's future:
What began as an experiment has become an important means of communication for GM. It has given me, personally, an opportunity to get much closer with you, the public. Often, I find your comments insightful and compelling. At times your criticism is harsh. But the fact that you have remained interested and continue to have faith in our efforts to develop great products is a worthy motivator.

Questions have been raised as to whether I will continue to be involved in FastLane given my re-focused responsibilities. The answer is an unequivocal "yes." From its inception this blog has been a forum for GM's leadership to discuss important issues with a spotlight on product... product plans, product virtues and truths. In fact, I hope to see more GM leaders begin to engage in this conversation on the FastLane over the coming weeks.

  • Compressed Air Hybrids

Energine Corporation has a new prototype of a hybrid vehicle, called the PHEV (pictured on right), that runs on a compressed air engine and an electric motor. The electric motor is used when the vehicle reaches about 12-15 mph. Energine describes their hybrid car as follows:
The PHEV Car is a hybrid vehicle driven by a compressed air engine combined with electric motor. PHEV CAR is driven by expansive force of compressed air and it also uses a battery driven motor when it is necessary. Compressed air engine is operated by two strokes (suction (expansion)-exhaustion) when the internal combustion engine is operated by four strokes (suction-compression-explosion- exhaustion). Compressed air engine is operated during the start, acceleration or going up a hill where the electric motor consumes a great deal of power rapidly. The compressed air engine converts back to the electric motor when the vehicle reaches a speed of 20-25 km/h.
Engadget.com reports that France’s MDI has also been developing a compressed-air car called the Air Car since 2000 and has plans to release it for sale in 2006.

Car Buyers Holding Out For Deals

Car buyers appear reluctant to make new car purchases this year unless there is an incentive or special deal attached. The Baltimore Sun reports that car buyers have been spoiled by great offers over the past few years while the economy was in a slump after the tech crash and post 9/11.
Now, the car industry is feeling the pains of a consumer public that has gotten so used to discount shopping that it often won't buy at regular price. Car dealers have raked in record sales in recent years by luring customers with tantalizing incentives such as zero-percent interest and rebates worth several thousand dollars. But now that dealers are pulling back on those deals, they're not getting what they bargained for. Sales were down in the first three months of the year, and experts think consumers are holding out for the next big discount.
The article also says that sales for GM and Ford were down in March when compared to March, 2004's sales. However, Toyota, Nissan and Hyundai reported record March sales. Some auto industry experts think that issues like rising gas prices and rising interest rates are also reducing auto sales.

Gas Prices to Remain High During 2005

No one likes the new higher gas prices, but everyone better get used to them. If you are looking for gas prices to drop below $2 you may have a long wait. The Associated Press reports that $2 plus gas prices are likely to stick around. The AP says the Energy Department expects $50-plus crude oil levels to remain throughout 2005, which means gas prices will also stay high. The Energy Department also said it expects gas prices to average $2.35 a gallon nationwide in May.

    2006 Corvette Z06 Due Out Late 2005

Motor Trend has an inside look at the new 7.0 liter 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and they like what they see. They even refer to the car as the Dodge Viper slayer:
Here's the beef backing that brag: The 7.0-liter LS7 engine will produce at least 500 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 475 pound-feet of torque at 4800 rpm. Revving just slightly past its 7000-rpm redline through base Corvette six-speed gearing, it'll hit 60 mph in first in well under four seconds. The chassis is --drum roll--all aluminum. Magnesium and carbon-fiber parts also are used to help contain the total curb weight to under 3150 pounds. That'll put the new Z06's weight-to-power ratio below both the GT's 6.3 pounds/horsepower and the Viper's 6.8. Aero tuning reduces total lift and balances the front and rear lift coefficients while increasing the base Vette's 0.28 drag coefficient to 0.34.
Motor Trend says the new car won't be be out late 2005 and will have a base price of $75,000 to $85,000.

    More Pain at the Pump

CNN reports that the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded has climbed to $2.228, another record-setting price. CNN gets its figures from the AAA, a U.S. motorist organization. Drivers can also get the information themselves from the AAA's Daily Fuel Gage Report website, which provides national gas prices as well as local data. Unfortunately, the rising gas prices are likely to continue for at least another month or two. CNN reports: "The EIA said pump prices are expected to keep rising through the Memorial Day holiday in late May, the beginning of the busy U.S. summer driving season." CNN is also running a special section called Gas Pains to cover the rising summer gas prices. Drivers looking to find the best deals (without having to drive all over town first) can check websites like GasPriceWatch.com and GasBuddy.com. These websites have price spotters who report in with the prices at gas stations all over the country.

Escape From a Car Under Water

It is best to avoid driving through water when you do not know how deep it is. However, flash flooding can still surprise victims, so it is good to keep something in your vehicle that can get you out of danger. A Detroit News article says the power punch can help you break out through a window if you are trapped under water in a vehicle. The power punch smashes the window so that you can swim out to safety. In the article a a retired firefighter/paramedic and underwater rescue diver says:
I would like to suggest a trip to Sears for the purpose of purchasing a spring-loaded center punch, aka power punch. If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself trapped in a vehicle underwater, you need only to hold the point of the punch against the window, and push to load the spring. Presto -- no more window. This method works equally well on the side and rear windows of a car, but not as well on the windshield because it's a different kind of safety glass. The punch can be taped to the inside of a console, or anyplace else where it will be easy to find in an emergency.
Columnist Ray Magliozzi says that there are also "emergency hammers designed for this purpose, and flashlights that have glass-breaking points on the bottom." The article also recommends another device called the Escape Tip which hooks onto a seat belt.

April is National Car Care Month

April is National Car Care Month and the CarCare.org website provides an online resource with tips for maintaining every part of your car from belts and hoses to steering and transmission. Advance Auto Parts is also launching a consumer education program as part of National Car Care Month. The company is offering a series of 128 do-it-yourself (DIY) brochures that explain what consumers should know about vehicle maintenance, repair and safety. The brochures are free at the project brochure display in every Advance Auto Parts store across the country. Consumers can increase fuel mileage, avoid vehicle breakdowns and save between $500 and $1,000 annually on vehicle maintenance and repair by doing the work themselves.

"April is an important time to check under the hood, and not just because it's National Car Care Month," said Bryan Gregory, director of consumer education for Advance Auto Parts. "It's the start of the season when drivers travel longer distances for vacations and signals the onset of warmer weather, both of which place additional stress on vehicle systems. And with gas prices reaching new record highs, it's important to have a well-tuned vehicle to maximize fuel economy and save money."

Gregory recommends drivers examine at least seven vehicle systems to keep their car running well and looking good.
  • Tires & wheels
  • Fluids & filters
  • Fuel & air intake
  • Battery
  • Brakes
  • Safety systems and features
  • Exterior
